THE JAPANESE HOUSE / QUINNIE - PHILADELPHIA, PA 11.1.2023

Coverage by Danielle Ciampaglia

When The Japanese House took to the Union Transfer stage on November first, the electric energy was palpable. Amber Bain came out to a crowd ready to see her, picked up her lefty guitar, and kicked off the first night of the North American tour with “Sad to Breathe.”

The band’s chemistry was obvious. Their in-person sound was clean, cohesive, and lively. For how complicated The Japanese House’s music sounds, their stage setup was remarkably not that. Their wires and instruments were neat and non-distracting, giving space for the audience to look at the band, and not their gear.

One of the night’s highlights was in the final third of the show during the fast paced “Friends." The band’s keyboardist doubled as the saxophonist and they played the main riff live, adding soul to a song already drenched in it.

The Japanese House puts on a master class of musicianship. In The End It Always Does translates live in a way you can’t believe until you hear.
