UMI - BOSTON, MA 6.27.24

Coverage by Madi Bennett

There couldn’t have been a better experience for my first time finally seeing UMI live at TD Garden. UMI was one of Jhené Aiko’s opening acts for “The Magic Hour” tour in Boston last Thursday night. There’s no doubt UMI will be back to headline this arena in no time.

Most artists typically try to get the crowd amped up for the main act but UMI isn’t just any  artist. She had a very memorable entrance with amazing crowd control. She began her set with a calming meditation and was setting the energy for the show. They had the crowd close their eyes and do breathwork, letting go of negative energy and whatever they felt needed to be let go of. She kicked the show off with her song “wherever u r” and “happy im” which are definitely some fan favorites!

UMI has as close to an angelic voice as you can get. Their vocals are powerful yet delicate. She really puts all of her emotion in to each song and you can feel it. A highlight from her set would have to be when she covered “Lovers Rock” by Sade. The whole crowd was fully invested in her performance of this song, I actually even preferred it over the original. She was also very lively and interacted with fans who waved and sang along, creating a very memorable and notable performance

She ended her performance with “Remember Me” which is my personal favorite. The entire arena lit up their phones for this one, it was beautiful. I believe this is one of UMI’s strongest performance songs vocally, the mic was ON. They then closed the show with some words of gratitude. The only negative aspect to her set was that I wish it could have been longer. I’m already looking forward to seeing them live again and I’m eager to see her fanbase grow.

UMI was kind enough to meet people after all of the opening sets were finished, I was lucky enough to say hello and express my enjoyment for her music  and her performance. She had such a warm presence and you could tell how much she loves her fans by how invested she was into every person she met.

The next time UMI comes to Boston, you wouldn't want to miss out. I expect nothing less than a perfect show filled with positive vibes, beautiful vocals, and an amazing atmosphere.
