Rebecca Black brought the heat to Boston on the sold out opening night of the “Let Her Burn” tour last Thursday, and she certainly was ready to give it her all. While Black may be best known for her viral single “Friday” released back in 2011, she brings a fresh, fun pop sound on her new album.
Before Rebecca took the stage, opening the show was singer Mazie. Mazie also had her viral moment, most known for her song “dumb dumb” which became popular on TikTok. Her catchy, straight to the point lyrics got the crowd moving and set the mood for when Rebecca would come to the stage later in the night. Despite losing their “most important bag” the day before the tour started, Mazie and her band played a fantastic set!
Around 9pm it was time for Rebecca Black to take the stage. She emerged onto the stage amidst flashing white strobes alongside her two (amazing!) dancers to play her first song of the night “Crumbs,” off of her new album. The entire performance was tightly choreographed, and the crowd had a fantastic time watching Black and her dancers perform all types of moves, from the dancers carrying her around the stage to bejeweled chainsaws doubling as microphones.
Rebecca’s setlist included lots of songs off her new album, including “What Am I Gonna Do With You,” “Misery Loves Company,” “Destroy Me,” and “Cry Hard Enough” as well as some of her older singles. A cover of “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton was also thrown into the mix. And of course, she closed out the show with “Friday” and “Girlfriend.”
Throughout the show, I kept having to remind myself how small of a place I was seeing this performance in; the production made it feel as if we were in a much larger room. I have no doubt that we will see Rebecca at larger venues in the future, but for now I highly recommend checking out a stop on her tour if she comes near you!
