Prog metal powerhouse Pain of Salvation took over Brighton Music Hall on their long awaited US tour. Fans gathered early and got the chance to see french metal band Klone, with a powerful set that showcased their most recent release, Le Grand Voyage. The band would close their performance with an electrifying cover of Björk’s “Army of Me”, the perfect setup for Pain of Salvation to take the stage.

The band led by singer and songwriter Daniel Gildenlöw kicked off with “Accelerator”, a track from their latest album Panther, with an animalistic energy fitting for its title. It was obvious fans had been waiting to see the band for a long time, some experiencing them for the first time.

Pain of Salvation’s set focused heavily on their two latest releases, evenly displaying 2020’s Panther and 2017’s In the Passing Light of Day. The emotionally charged tracks captured the audience, with a connection that felt very real at times. From the confronting “Meaningless” and “Reasons”, to the more experimental “Restless Boy”, Pain of Salvation’s sound is as gripping and complex as ever.

Gildenlöw’s charm was present as always, sharing funny stories about life on the road and the difficulties of touring. He would also get candid with fans about certain songs, especially when introducing the closing track, 15 minute epic “The Passing Light of Day”, talking about it being the one song they had trouble with during soundcheck. It would not be necessary, as the song sounded beautifully and was an emotional end to an incredible show that fans will cherish for years to come.
