ALICE PHOEBE LOU - BOSTON, MA 4.2.24
Coverage by Kimmy Curry
Alice Phoebe Lou kicked off her North American tour with a sold out night at the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. She performed a stripped down solo set, singing while playing acoustic guitar, and then moved to an electric keyboard for a few songs. The set included most of the tracks off of her 2023 album "Shelter", and a few from her older albums as well as a cover of Angel Olsen's "Unfucktheworld" and an untitled new song. Alice's uniquely entrancing vocal style had the crowded room mesmerized by her entire performance, enhanced by the stripped-down renditions of her songs. With Alice having the stage to herself and the audience's full attention, the general feeling in the venue was of admiration and emotional closeness with the artist. Laughing and chatting with her fans between songs, Alice was clearly very happy and at ease on the stage in Boston, and she reminisced about her past shows in the city.
The musician spoke candidly about her surprise at the recent success of her song "Witches", which she told the audience was "recorded in one day in [her] friend's living room". "Witches" is now her most popular song on Spotify with almost 32 million streams, due to its popularity online. Alice also told us that America is where most of her listenership is, even though she is South African-born and Berlin-based. Alice finished the set with her song Hammer, a beautifully lilting and introspective love song to end the night.
If the first night is any indicator, the rest of her tour is sure to be spectacular and it continues this month with a busy few weeks that wrap up with a show in Washington, DC.
